The first parts of the inland port of Magdeburg date back to the year 1893. Since 1992 the several port terminals are kept together in the Magdeburger Hafen GmbH. The overall turnover per year in the three current trimodal port sections is more than 4 million tons. Besides the traditional port activities of load/discharge, storage and distribution the Magdeburger Hafen GmbH also provides integrated transport solutions and management and manages and markets local economic areas and infrastructures. In the Hanse-Terminal as one of the port sections the Magdeburger Hafen GmbH collaborates with the Otto-von-Guericke-University of Magdeburg and Fraunhofer IFF. With the installation of several sensor systems (video and RTLS) the Hanse-Terminal provides a research and development platform to the Saxony-Anhalt Galileo Test Bed.
