On August 11, 2020 an article appeared in the Deutsche Verkehrszeitung, a German specialist journal for the transport and logistics industry, about the PortForward project, its goals, solutions and developments. In particular, the cooperation within the framework of the project between the Fraunhofer IFF and the port of Magdeburg was discussed.

The port of Magdeburg focuses on digital support for port processes on the topics of warehousing and logistics. In the project the Fraunhofer IFF and the port of Magdeburg are working on a solution to enable the use of digital VR models for planning and operating the port. For this purpose, real data from the port are linked by various sensors, cameras or databases with a virtual model of the port in order to offer the operators a complete overview of the current processes.

In the area of warehouse management, solutions are being developed that are intended to give employees an improved overview of the availability of areas with the help of lidar technology (light detection and ranging). The virtual 3D model of the port was also realized in the Mixed Reality Laboratory Elbedome of the Fraunhofer IFF and integrated via a Fraunhofer Service Cloud platform.
